Antique Religious Paintings for Sale | 16th–18th Century Sacred Art

Religious subjects dominated European painting for centuries, commissioned for churches, private chapels, and devout households across the continent. These works often reflect not only artistic mastery but the specific theological and cultural moment in which they were created — from the restrained clarity of Renaissance devotional panels to the dramatic intensity of Baroque sacred scenes. Each piece in this collection has been researched for its iconography and history, and restored with the same care given to any museum-quality work.

After Cimabue
Sale Price: $2,700.00 Original Price: $4,200.00

This small devotional panel (20.5 x 14 cm) depicts Saint John the Baptist in the wilderness, accompanied by the lamb, an allusion to Christ as the Agnus Dei, and holding a slender cross-staff, symbolizing his role as the forerunner. The saint is shown in a contemplative stance, partially draped in a red mantle, within a restrained landscape setting.

The halo is executed in gold leaf, a feature consistent with late medieval and early Renaissance panel painting traditions.

The fine craquelure of the pictorial layer, together with the panel’s characteristics, such as the wood grain and curvature, are consistent with age and suggest a dating around the 14th century. No signature present.
